Ramayana was composed during the 5th century BCE. It is an ancient Indian epic which is all about the exile and then return of Lord Rama, prince of Ayodhya. Ramayana was composed in Sanskrit by Valmiki, a great sage who taught the song and story to Rama’s sons, Lava and Kush. They were twins who grew up in Sage Valmiki’s ashram. The epic focuses on Prince Rama’s quest to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana.

Ramayana comprises of 24,000 verses. It is a quite long poem also known as the Adi Kavya which means the original poem.
It teaches us several important lessons: Family values which means loyalty towards family and the duties & responsibilities of each relationship.

The Birth of Lord Rama

The king of Ayodhya, Dasharath had no children. So the king Putra-kameshti sacrifice which means son which is desired. After some time, the queens gave birth to sons: to the eldest was born Rama, to the youngest was born Bharat, and to the second queen were born the twins Lakshman and Shatrughna.

Rama & Sita Marriage

Valmiki introduced Ram and Laxman to the swayamvar festivities of the Mithila princess, Sita. She was adopted by the king of that country. After Sita had grown up the king declared that he would give her in marriage to anyone who could string the Great Bow of Shiva. No one was able to lift the bow except Lord Rama. After that, Rama was married to Sita.

Exile of Lord Rama

When Dasharath had grown too old, he decided Ram to rule the kingdom. But his youngest queen invoked an old promise, she demanded that Rama should be banished and Bharata to be crowned as king. Dasrath refused to do so but Lord Rama decided to honor his father’s old promise and left for the forests with Laxman and Sita for 14 years.

The abduction of Sita

One day, Surpanakha, a demoness saw Rama and was instantly attracted by his youthful good looks. She begged him to marry her but Lord Rama refused by saying that he already has a wife. Surpanakha got angry and rushed towards Sita to kill her. In order to save Sita, Lakshmana cut off Surpanakha’s nose and ears. The demoness flew to Lanka which was ruled by his brother Ravana and complained. Ravana got angry and abducted Sita to seek vengeance.

Rama meets Hanuman

In his quest to search Sita, Lord Rama met Hanuman who located Sita to be in Ravana’s kingdom in Lanka. With the help of Hanuman and the monkey army, Lord Rama was able to kill Ravana and rescue Sita.
