There are bugs in our society that are crawling in our teens, youth and adults just like when a virus enters our computer system it’s not visible, our system unapologetically becomes slow, it starts corrupting files and it slowly degenerates our entire “system”. Depression is one such creeping virus. It’s not visible, it doesn’t have visual injuries, uncommunicable, yet it is able to become the second leading cause of death.

Depression as describes by oxford dictionary, “Feelings of severe despondency and dejection.” It includes feelings like prolonged sadness, loss of interest in activities, lowered self-worth and discouragement. Depression is just not about being sad, it is extreme state of melancholy and the lack of motivation to do anything.

As neglected as it is, people suffering from depression are often advised to get over it or to stop overthinking but we need to understand that it is different from sadness. Depression weighs you down whereas sadness is a tangible feeling. Depressed people don’t open up and don’t share their feelings rather they isolates themselves. When people are just sad they rant about it even more.

36% of our population suffers from acute depression and anxiety

In India 36 percent of our population suffers from acute depression and anxiety. Its nerving that the major bracket lies from the age group of 6 to 25 years. Yes, that’s the youth of the nation, our growth and prosperity relies on them.

  3. Increased fatigue and sleep problems
  4. Anxiety
  5. Changes in appetite and weight
  6. Uncontrollable emotions

Are there any reasons at all?

COMPETITION: The biggest and deadliest reason is the feeling of unworthiness. An innocent mind feels unworthy when constantly being compared to the more successful people of his age group. Society needs to understand that a child is not a success meter. A person has individuality and talent. Let it bloom.

SOCIAL VALIDATION: The world has turned into a global village, true. But it has evolved a suede sense of connectivity. There is another level of acceptance called as social media acceptance. People are more socially dependent making them hollow and crave attention.

There are numerous major reasons, sexual orientation, bullying on part of the peers or peer pressure may lead a child to develop early depression.

People who commit suicide do it because they think they have no future left, nothing to live for. But wait, isn’t IIT the one place with bright and shinning future is a foregone conclusion? It doesn’t add does it? Why does a student who had world ahead of him do this? There is a wide acceptance in our society that explains that if a person is successful, he is happy.

Chester Bennington suicide left us startled that such a successful person with life (supposing) on flower bed can commit suicide due to depression.

Treatment for depression

  1. Get in a routine
  2. Set goals
  3. Exercise
  4. Eat healthy
  5. Get enough sleep
  6. Take on responsibilities
  7. Challenge negative thoughts.
  8. Check with your doctor before using supplements.
  9. Do something new.
  10. Try to have fun.

A little about mental health

Mental health is related to mental and psychological well-being.
It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:

  • Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
  • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
  • Family history of mental health problems

It’s not just a “phase”

It’s not too late to realize that depression is a biological, social and psychological implication. Instead of telling people to “snap it out” or “deal with it” we need to start helping them. Most of the people suffering from it don’t actually realize it and gets plunged deeper and deeper into its web.

“If God wanted us to take our lives he would have provided a power-off button.” Depression as critical as it may seem demand very simple solutions. It is like termite and before you realize it, it causes the damage.  Anybody could get depressed, you, me, your loved ones but it can be treated by little attention and awareness.
